8 Common Myths About diets and Weight loss

1. All fats are bad!

It seems that the most common myth when it comes to weight loss, is that all fats are bad, and they should be cut off our diet. However, it is a true fact that we need certains fats. Fats support the absorption of important nutrients from the body, and are good for the wholeness of the cell membrane. Some fats also decrease the risk of heart diseases and some types of cancer.

The key to a well-balanced diet is the replacement of the bad fats with good fats, which are also known as monosaturated and omega-3 fats.

2. Sugar can cause diabetes

It is broadly known that sugar can cause diabetes. So if you already have a diabetes, you have to carefully watch out for the quantity of sugar you consume. If you however don't have diabetes, the consumption of sugar and simple carbs won't lead to one. The main cause of type 2 diabetes is proven to be constant high-calorie eating plan and lack of exercise in daily life.

3. Avoiding sea food can lower the cholesterol

It may sound unbelievable, but it is true – there is such a myth as well. Actually the diet cholesterol that is contained in the sea food and some other types of meats has a little influence on the blood cholesterol. The saturated and trans fats are the biggest factor for increasing the bad cholesterol levels. The saturated fats can be found in packaged foods and some fatty meats, whereas the trans fats are contained in the majority of packaged snacks, chips, margarine etc.

4. Reduce the carbs to lose weight

Many low-carb diets are based on the fact that the carbs can support the increase of insulin levels, which can result in weight gain. Therefore they recommend reduce of carbs in the diet, so that a weight can be lost. Pity to say, but this is another myth in the weight loss area.
Lots of low-carb diets don't provide enough carbs for the body and for its daily needs. Therefore it starts burning stored carbs (glycogen) for energy. When glycogen is being used, the body starts losing much water. This means that the initial fast drop of pounds is not a result from fat burning, but rather from dehydratation.

Many of the low-carb diets are also low in calories. They recommend daily calorie intake of about 1000-1400 calories, compared to normal consumption of 1800-2200. With such a low number of calories consumed, it doesn't really matter if you eat low-carb or high-carb foods.

5. Nuts are high in fats, so we have to reduce the consumption

It is true that nuts are high in fats. Do you know that 15 small pieces of cashew are equal to 180 calories? It is also a fact that many of us can simply overeat with nuts, and in this case we really consume lots of fats. But if we consume a balanced quantity of nuts daily, this is actually quite a healthy part of our diet. The nuts contain good fats – they are high in monosaturated fats, which lower the bad cholesterol levels.

6. If pregnant, you have to eat for two!

Many to-be mothers have surely come across the theory that during pregnancy they have to eat for two people. However the idea that eating large quantities of ice cream while pregnant is a myth. The recommended calorie intake for a pregnant woman should be about 100kcal more daily for the first three months, and 300 kcal more daily for the rest of pregnancy period. So, a healthy snack like low-fat yoghurt, a fresh fruit or some skim milk before bedtime can actually be enough.

7. Skipping meals

Another very popular myth when it comes to weight loss, is that if we skip meals, we'll lower our calorie intake and we will lose weight. This however is very wrong and unhealthy. If we skip a meal our body gets into the so called "starvation mode" trying to save as much food as possible, so that it is not endangered. As a result our organism stops burning calories. Moreover, if we skip one or two meals a day, the chance that we overeat with the third is quite high.

8. Red meat is bad

There are certain types of research that prove the fact, that red meat can increase the risk of heart disease. However another less popular fact is that even the chicken contains the same number of saturated fats. Surprised? Let us give you an example – a portion of pork or beef has the same quantity of saturated fats as the same portion of chicken with skin. So instead of simply taking off the red meat from your menu, choose lean meats that don't contain saturated fats.
